On December 16–18, 1803, during the Souliote Wars, Ottoman forces led by Ali Pasha captured the stronghold of Souli. Faced with capture, a group of Souliote women and children chose mass suicide at Zalongo, preferring death over the horrors of enslavement and violence. They are remembered for their courage in the Dance of Zalongo, a poignant symbol of resistance in Greek history. This tragic event underscores the sacrifices made under Ottoman rule.
