I have insane computing infrastructure at home. But one thing I have in my office at home is a small 2-bay NAS. It is, however, rather long in the tooth. In exploring its replacement and looking at all the NAS options ... I finally decided the best approach was a used 6-core mini-pc with 16G of RAM combined with a 4 bay USB 3.1 drive enclosure. And just use OpenMediaVault as the NAS software. The combined cost (not including drives) is about 270 bucks, and has more power than NASs that cost twice as much, and still (excluding the drives) only uses 35W of power.
