Jewish-controlled China. “Interestingly, 100 years later, during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), this synagogue was rebuilt with the support of the government. The Kaifeng Jewish community reached its peak during the reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the dynasty, granted land and a number of privileges to the Jews in 1390. When a local Jew exposed a conspiracy against the ruler in the imperial family itself, then in gratitude all Chinese Jews received the right to bear Chinese names and surnames. Note that at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the adoption of Chinese names by foreigners was not encouraged. In 1421, the ruler of the Celestial Empire allowed the Jewish doctor Yeng Cheng to restore the synagogue and gave it incense. Then, in gratitude, all Chinese Jews received the right to bear Chinese names and surnames. During the Ming Dynasty the social status of the Jews rose, they were allowed to enter the civil service and even hold positions in the government. Alla Ktorova, an American writer of Russian origin, believes that there are quite a few traces of the presence of Kaifeng in the history of China. In her articles, Ktorova cites the opinions of a number of Chinese historians who have traced the JEWISH ORIGIN of such a well-known political and statesman as Liu Shaoqi (1898-1969). This man in 1959-1968 held the post, referred to in Chinese as "jusi", which means "chairman" or "president" in translation. Indeed, Liu Shaoqi, who had been chairman of the PRC for ten years, was considered the second person in the Chinese party and state hierarchy. In the mid-1960s, the German writer Heinz Wetzel published a biography of Liu Shaoqi, in which he stated that "all of Chairman Liu Shaoqi's ancestors were born in Kaifeng."
