One crew member was killed, and the ship was set on fire. The attack was part of al-Qaeda’s post-9/11 campaign against the oil trade. He was sentenced in 2017 and transferred to Saudi custody in 2018. He trained at al-Qaeda camps, met Osama bin Laden, and later testified as a prosecution witness identifying other al-Qaeda figures. In 1998 he and Khalid al-Mihdhar - one of the five hijackers on American Airlines Flight 77 that hit the Pentagon - married Yemeni sisters in a double wedding in Sanaa.
