Getting actual power takes a lot of training, and convincing people she has something valuable to offer. The story's driven by her own goals, not the urgent need to maintain the status quo. Right now I'm working on a fantasy short story about people whose identities are being devoured by what amounts to an insanity virus. Also figuring out what book to write next: possibly a pretty straightforward fantasy "sucked into a game" adventure, or a book 3 of a series about a steampunk engineer, or something new in my science fiction setting. A problem for the last two is that I've got a lot of spinning plates in motion and am not sure how to get a specific strong plot out of the situation. In the fantasy world the hero's trying to bring industrialization to a magical kingdom but his friend has introduced Christianity to kobolds, who immediately invented a dragon-flavored variant. In the SF setting, I'm trying to stay optimistic but predicted secession and the start of a tech breakdown in the existing US.
