Many claim to have discernment, then find themselves in sinful situations, abusive relationships, and far from God’s will. How does this happen? When biblical discernment is mistaken for feelings, we will inevitably miss the mark. We’ll mistake wrong for right, bad for good, and ours or the devil’s will for God’s will. This is because the heart is deceptive above all things (Jeremiah 17:9). Biblical discernment is more than a feeling. It’s more than a “vibe check.” It’s more than goosebumps, emotional experiences, or “spirit confirmations” detached from truth. Emotions are indicators to pay attention to, but not road signs to follow. That’s why Scripture never tells us to test everything by emotion. Rather, by the Word of God, which is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Biblical discernment is measuring every feeling, thought, teaching, relationship, trend, and desire against the Word of God—not against whatever feels good in the moment. Understand that the devil doesn’t only speak in lies, but also in half truths. “God is love.” Correct, but He’s also holy, holy, holy. (Isaiah 6:3) “Jesus ate with sinners.” Yes, to call them to repentance and to sin no more (John 8:11) “You shouldn’t judge.” Do not judge hypocritically, but judge righteously (Matthew 7:1-5, John 7:24) “Follow your heart.” Scripture says: “The heart is deceitful above all things.” (Jeremiah 17:9) “Be true to yourself.” Deny yourself. (Luke 9:23) “God just wants you happy.” No, He wants you to be holy, obedient, and transformed (Romans 8:29, 12:1-2). “Speak your truth.” There is not “your truth” and “my truth.” There is one Truth: Jesus Christ (John 14:6). “Love means affirming everything someone does.” Biblical love rejoices in the truth and correction. (1 Corinthians 13:6, Hebrews 12:6) “Cut off anyone who challenges you.” Faithful are the wounds of a friend, and iron sharpens iron. (Proverbs 27:6, 17) “If it gives you peace, it must be from God.” False peace exists. Sin calms before it destroys, but obedience can feel hard before bearing fruit. Jesus experienced agony, grief and distress while obeying the Father *perfectly* (Matthew 26:37). “Manifest it.” We are called to pray, trust, obey, and submit to God’s will, not treat Him like a Genie to serve ours. (Philippians 4:6, Luke 22:42) “God told me…” If what follows contradicts Scripture, God did not say it. If what follows aligns with Scripture, it is fine, but redundant. (Galatians 1:8, Revelation 22:18-19) Not everything spiritual is biblical—demons are spirits too. Not everything comforting is true—the devil manufactures a counterfeit peace. Not everything that sounds loving is actually love—the devil will never tell you the whole truth. Discernment asks: —Does this align with God’s character? —Does it align with Scripture in context? —Does it produce holiness or just emotionalism?—Does it glorify self or glorify Christ? —Does it cost self, or my relationship with God? —Is this wisdom from God, or just culture wearing a Bible verse? Real discernment places Scripture at the center, not feelings, and requires knowing God’s Word deeply enough to recognize counterfeits when they appear. *Study to show yourself approved unto God* (2 Timothy 2:15)
