Here's a very interesting picture I took myself. As you can see the sun is behind a sign so I could focus on the clouds themselves.... But how is the sunlight so intense on parts of the clouds nearest the sun but dimmer just a little to the right? If the sun is much larger than the earth and 93 million miles away how is the brightness that different in contrast to such a miniscule extra distance? Wouldn't the clouds be illuminated the same considering how large and far away the sun is?
