What do you want most in life? I'd guess it's probably something that, if you got it, would bring you happiness. Am I hot or cold? Because often it's not the thing we're after... it's the emotion we think that "thing" will bring us. Yet... happiness can seem elusive, no? Even when we hit one of those big goals. And, it rarely lasts. This is one of the big "reality riddles" as I call them. And I first heard the answer to this riddle from Tenzin Palmo: "When we seek happiness for ourselves, we will always be disappointed. When we seek happiness for others, we find happiness for ourselves." (Tenzin Palmo is a Buddhist nun who meditated for 12 years in a cave up in the Himalayan mountains, in the snow... check her out). Last night I realized that the same message is also in Hill's controversial "Outwitting the Devil". Thought I'd share!
