Researchers synthesized global data covering tens of thousands of people between the ages of 10 and 90. Exercise consistently reduced depression symptoms across every age group studied. In many studies it matched antidepressant medication in effectiveness. In others it outperformed it. Aerobic exercise showed the strongest results. Running, swimming, and dancing were specifically identified as among the most effective activities. More vigorous exercise generally produced greater symptom relief than lighter activity. Supervised group exercise showed particularly strong outcomes, suggesting that structure, accountability, and social connection add a meaningful layer on top of the physical benefits. The anxiety findings are also real but require honest framing. Exercise reduced anxiety symptoms across multiple studies, but the evidence base is smaller and less consistent than for depression. The depression finding is the stronger and more certain one at this stage. The neuroscience behind the results is well documented. Aerobic exercise increases BDNF, a growth factor supporting neurogenesis, and simultaneously raises serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, the same neurotransmitters targeted by antidepressants. It also reduces cortisol and has been shown to increase hippocampal volume, directly reversing what chronic stress does to the brain.
