Crooks isn't the end all by any means. No more than he was the beginning. Whether Crooks (or whoever) acted alone or as part of a greater conspiracy is academic: this is where things are -- and an unsubtle hint at where things are headed. Crooks expresses the "new normal." He's merely the exclamation point at the end of one sentence of a ceaseless diatribe that has been arguiing for this for decades. As many have pointed out, Crooks made his target after all: he killed a man, a father, the type of man America needs more than they need a superannuated circus impresario. Few were surprised that this happened. Most saw this or something similar coming. And few will be surprised at the internecine political squabbles that ensue -- or the vacuous findings of the investigation to follow. What then remains to be seen, the only real question here, is not so much what happens next, but what happens when it happens AGAIN i.e. the next time some "Crooks" by another name picks up his gun. Will people be surprised then?
