Why the Sunni rebel forces victory in Syria is a huge win for Israel and a massive defeat for Hezbollah and Hamas: The Iran-to-Lebanon "Shia Corridor" resupply route has been cut.

The Russian air bases and seaports on the Mediterranean in Latakia and Tartus are also going to be lost. Hezbollah and Hamas, which have been decimated by their recent wars with Israel, will be unable to rearm or rebuild their forces. Iranian agents will also be unable to bring in their usual suitcases full of cash.

Syria is majority Sunni, but it was run by the Assad family and the Alawite sect, allied with Christians, Druze and non-religious Sunnis. For 60+ years, while Syria was a loyal Soviet and then Russian client state, this status quo was maintained. Assad permitted Iran transit rights on the ground and in their air space over Syria and onward to Lebanon. Shia Iran also helped to prop up the Assad regime against their mutual Sunni adversaries.

Iran was Hezbollah's primary source of arms, and now it's cut off. Arms coming in by sea from Russia will also stop. The well-armed Hezbollah militia, which is Shia, became the dominant force in Lebanon, oppressing the Sunnis, Christians and Druze. That era is over, and Hezbollah is going to wither on the vine.

The Sunni rebel victory is going to have consequences far beyond Syria. The way may finally be opened up for the long-anticipated natural gas pipeline from Qatar to Turkey to Europe. As long as Syria was a Russian client, this pipeline would never be built. Now it may.
