I had an epiphany! I finally have some insight into why pronouns have become so profoundly important, especially to certain groups. See, I am Gen X. I think it's safe to say that GenXers don't like to be labeled, don't want to be pigeon holed by labels and categories. So, what I figured out is that Millennials and some Gen Z ar the children of Gen X parents. What does every new generation always do? They rebel against their parents. If Gen X doesn't care about labels or categories like race, sex, gender, etc. then their Millennial and Gen Z children must feel a compulsion to do the opposite. Thus the profound importance of pronouns, race, sexual identity, We were the grunge generation, we were the generation that didn't care about most things. We hated labels and categories. We wanted to be seen as individuals, first and foremost. So, a rebellious child must, by necessity, care deeply about labeling everything, categorizing everything. So, while I'm Menith and nothing else is all that important for me. For them, it is desperately important to make it known they are a, for example, non-binary, AroAce, athiest, democratic socialist, BLM supporter, that stands with Ukraine and that uses they/them pronouns, or whatever. You all certainly don't have to agree with me, but think about it and let me know if you think I'm on to something or totally out of my mind.
