Want a good book to read while it's wintry outside? Island in the Sky by Ernest Gann is a superb page-turner not just for the story itself but how it is told. Ernest Gann was not only a great observer of human nature and the world around him. He had the additional formidable ability to write down his observations in a way that brought others into the story. He was a pilot in the early days of commercial aviation but much of the joy of reading his books is that you don't need to know anything about aviation or survival in the wilderness to understand and appreciate his stories. In the way he tells his stories he makes you an expert and makes you feel like you were one long before you picked up his book. That's good writing!
