Twelve countries are set to slap sanctions on trade with illegal Israeli settlements, citing increasing attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank. “Today, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK confirm their intention to introduce national and/or support European restrictions on trade in goods with settlements which are illegal under international law, or that they are actively considering these and other measures, in accordance with their national procedures,” the nations’ foreign ministers said in a joint statement. The states acting together will further be perceived as a significant rebuke to US policy in the Middle East, including by countries that are historically close American allies. The British government on Tuesday recognised the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, declared the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and announced both a ban on goods from Israeli settlements and on all arms licences and other exports that “materially contribute to the occupation.” Middle East Eye revealed in August that Andy Burnham’s government had decided to ban settlement goods.
