JS Asuka is a dedicated experimental test ship for advanced naval technologies, currently equipped with two cutting-edge weapon systems: an electromagnetic railgun and a 100kW high-power laser weapon. Electromagnetic Railgun: Developed by Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), this system fires hypersonic projectiles at speeds up to Mach 6.5 (2,230 m/s). It has successfully completed live-fire tests against target vessels, marking the first time a ship-mounted railgun has hit a moving target at sea. The railgun uses electromagnetic force instead of chemical propellants, achieving sustained firing of 120 rounds without barrel degradation, a major advancement over previous attempts. The turret weighs 8 tonnes and is powered by compact capacitors in standard shipping containers. 100kW Laser Weapon: Installed for sea trials, this high-energy laser system is designed to counter threats like drones, small boats, and mortar rounds. It is housed in a 40-foot containerized unit on deck and is being evaluated for continuous engagement, precision tracking, and integration with sensor systems under real-world conditions. These systems are part of Japan’s broader effort to enhance naval defense against hypersonic missiles and saturation attacks, with future deployment planned on next-generation destroyers like the 13DDX and 27DDG classes.
