A few years ago I planted out a nice row of cabbages. They grew well, but the weather was a bit too wet and humid, so they got infected with fungal disease. Still harvestable, but not as perfect as I had hoped. One day a hail storm arrived and shredded them. Some of the hail stones were sharp, like crystals. Not a pretty sight, but I let the remains rot back down into the soil, to help feed the next crop. This year, I planted cabbages again, and wouldn`t you know it, its been a wet season and the fungus is back. The weather forecast (fake and gay to some, but not to me!) says a hail storm will arrive in seven days time. The next week is going to be crazy as I try to make shelters for some of my more valuable plants, harvest some, leave others. Do I try to protect the cabbages? They aren`t quite ready for harvest yet, but if the next seven days are sunny and warm they might be ready just before the hail arrives - especially if I feed them with some of my secret recipe ancient fertiliser. Do I leave them, or harvest? Harvest now, or wait? Perhaps the cabbages are a lost cause, too far gone, and I should focus on protecting other crops? Although, if I rummage around near the creek I might be able to find some materials to make a shelter with - or even a wheel barrow I could use to transplant the cabbages to a more protected location. Decisions, decisions. Perhaps I should just go inside and make myself a nice margarita (with a splash of orange), and see how the garden looks tomorrow?
