The male Gulf fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) is a bright neon-orange butterfly native to the southern United States, Central America, and South America. They are common visitors to open areas, parks, and suburban gardens, where they fly rapidly and feed on nectar from a wide variety of flowers. This species is famous for its strict reliance on passion vines (Passiflora), which serve as the exclusive food source for their spiky orange-and-black caterpillars. While the upper side of their wings is a striking orange, the undersides feature distinct, flashing silvery-white spots that help camouflage the butterfly when its wings are closed at rest.
