Taking a break from invasive species today to check the chokecherries. I didn’t think they were fully ripe yet, but the bear left a fresh opinion on the driveway, and Tail Light, my dog, agrees. She can't eat them fast enough. Chokecherries out here take their lumps: black knot, fireblight, storms, you name it. They lose a few branches, sucker from the base, and keep producing. Normally I wait for the deep, dark berries, but with the hungry hordes moving in, I might be picking early this year. Nutritionally, chokecherries beat supermarket cherries hands down. Smaller berries always win these contests. And since my only hope of sweet cherries lives in a pot in the garage, chokecherries are officially on the menu. Northern life teaches you to read the land the same way you read a case file. Comes in handy when we're working on the Mystery Destiny Series.
