Plantago major rubra, plain old plantain with a cheeky red tinge, is the garden superstar I totally missed. When it comes to drought tolerance, this plant is a winner — perfect for pots baking in full sun. It’s the kind of plant that takes a beating and keeps on truckin’. Originally from Persia, it wandered its way around the globe and was once the plant no one wanted to be without. Now, assuming people back then weren’t a few zuchini short of a loaf and were travelling mostly on foot, you’ve got to admit we’re missing something pretty important here. If they needed this tough little guy, and we don’t, well… maybe we’re the ones who dropped the ball, don’t you think?
