In all honesty, I started growing leeks as I can't grow agave in our N. Ontario zone 4 garden. I want that dramatic structural look. (Leek soup is a side benefit.) I've reached the point where plants need a double benefit to earn weeding time. Everyone pays rent in our home. But the leeks are letting me down, or perhaps they were a bad choice. The plus is: they grow easily from seed, live 2 years, blooming the second, and sending out offsets for propagation. A beautiful, well-behaved edible. Except, they aren't enjoying my ph. 8, drought-prone situation. They prefer neutral soil and more consistent watering. The hunt is on for a more sustainable dramatic onion. Thinking about Welsh and Yellow Spanish. What have you found that works in alkaline droughty soils? #gardening #resilience #writerslife
