Ever stop to think for a moment if that's what they actually want? @JCSlater was posting today about chatter he heard from those in-the-know about banning retail traders from trading options. Want to know an easy way to accomplish that? Crash the markets, blame "reddit traders" who were using "complicated financial tools made for institutions" combined with "irresponsible amounts of leverage" and turn the mob loose. And now the government gets to present itself as the solution to this bane - a "stabilizing" force in the markets. "Problem," meet "Solution." It's not as far-fetched as some might think.
