On September 11, 2001, 37-year-old FDNY firefighter Daniel Thomas Suhr was responding to the World Trade Center as the attacks unfolded. Near the intersection of West and Liberty Streets, a civilian who had fallen from the South Tower struck Suhr, killing him instantly. His death occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. and became the first FDNY fatality of the day. Suhr was a firefighter with FDNY Engine Company 216. His colleagues were able to remove his body from the area before the World Trade Center towers collapsed. He was later buried at St. Charles/Resurrection Cemeteries in East Farmingdale, New York. Suhr was 37 years old when he died. He is memorialized at the National September 11 Memorial at the South Pool, on Panel S-14.
