Sweet and Smoky Homemade BBQ Sauce Ingredients: 1 cup ketchup 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed) 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup molasses 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional, for extra smokiness) 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Instructions: Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, whisk together all the ingredients until smooth. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a low simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat and let it continue to simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken as it cooks. Adjust to taste: Taste the sauce and adjust the flavors as needed. If you want it sweeter, add a little more brown sugar. For more tang, add a splash of apple cider vinegar. Cool and store: Let the sauce cool slightly before using on your roasted chicken. Any leftover sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Tips for adapting the sauce For a spicier kick: Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or a dash of your favorite hot sauce. For a richer flavor: Sauté a finely chopped onion and some minced garlic in a tablespoon of oil before adding the other ingredients. For a thinner sauce (good for mopping): You can add a little water or chicken broth to reach your desired consistency.
