One chore we did this week was to clean up the last of our cabbages. With the weather warming, the pests are returning. One way we like to reduce pest damage is to regularly clean older leaves off our plants. Most plants can easily loose 50-60% of their leaves without damaging the plant. Bugs love to lay their eggs on the leaves closest to the ground. By removing these leaves on a weekly basis, we are removing the eggs before they have a chance to hatch. If there are any pests that do reach maturity, a simple blast of water may be all that's needed to remove them. For any caterpillar troubles you may have, Bt is an effective, organic approach. Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) is only good for about a year once opened, so be sure and get a fresh bottle if you find yours not working as well as it did in the past.
