But the explosion of massive data centers is raising some serious questions about power costs, water consumption, privacy, surveillance and just how far America should go in the race to dominate AI. And Americans are increasingly skeptical. A 2026 Gallup poll cited in the article found 7 in 10 oppose AI data centers being built in their local area.
