People get a vicarious sense of pride/glory if their country looks big on a map But small countries have best quality of life nowadays: -surrounded by your own culture. People 100 mi away need permission to even visit -fewer foreign-born voters voting for confiscatory taxation & your humiliation Rome was a major power for about 600 years, but when it became an empire, it deliberately replaced its own people while at the height of its power The Celts were never an empire. They were a major force for a similar period of time, and never did so Homogeneity is better than sharing a government with horrible people, even if it means accepting that you'll be a citizen in a smaller, weaker polity.
