It's ironic that of all the things we are taught to do and care for... our body isn't one of them. And most PT and similar services do little to long term help us do that. Around 2018 I had a doctor tell me I should consider back surgery. My back had been bothering me for many years off and on, and became significantly worse during a particular season. Like when I developed ulcers... I thought I was healthy. I thought I ate well. The problem is when everyone is so unhealthy, no one realizes everyone is so unhealthy… I decided to ignore that doctor - I knew a few guys who had back surgery and none had outcomes I wanted to emulate. I continued to train judo, did more mobility and more strength training, and over time my back became significantly better. The only times it generally bothers me now are 100% my own fault, and that more than anything else is important for people to realize - much of your pain is self-imposed, the product of your choices, not mere happenstance. Same with my torn meniscus in my knee - doctor suggested surgery. The data shows surgery is a roll of the dice at best… so I did something different. Instead, I did peptides, PT, and similar interventions. It wasn't always a perfect straight forward progress, but six or so months later I was doing light sparring with one of my sensei's and he said, "this is you with a torn meniscus?" The human body has the potential to heal if you work with it rather than against it.
