Currently, NSW Police need a search or crime-scene warrant before seeking a Digital Evidence Access Order, but a new government bill would sever that link for certain offences. And unlocking the phone isn't necessarily where it ends. Police are already using Israeli spyware made by Cellebrite that can extract huge amounts of device data, including messages, call logs, locations, metadata and potentially deleted material. NSW Police FOI records reportedly show 160 Cellebrite kits across the state and roughly 30,800 phones examined so far. The government says these powers are aimed at serious organised crime. Civil-liberties advocates will inevitably ask the obvious question: how comfortable are you with a warrantless roadside seizure potentially becoming the gateway to your entire digital life?
