Monday, September 7, 2026 THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING GOOD Luke 6:6-11 We have often witnessed, if not experienced, that life is filled with conflicts and tensions caused by different stances toward reality. Tensions related to self-interest or to ideas about what to do and how to act. And we ask ourselves: How do we respond to reality in our daily lives? What is permitted on the Sabbath: to do good or evil, to save someone or to let them die? Manuel, raising his arms, said: “What is lawful, good, useful, appropriate, and humane is to do good and not let anyone die… But problems, doubts, and concrete difficulties begin when we move on to the means: What does this require of us? Nothing more and nothing less than paying attention to others, understanding their needs, and using our time, talents, and resources to help them.” He paused briefly and gently continued: “And, above all, to shift our mindset from a narcissistic egoism that thinks I am the center of the world and others are merely means to my happiness or comfort…” He paused, looked at them tenderly, and continued: “To a sense of fraternity that understands something as difficult as the fact that my freedom doesn’t begin where the freedom of others ends, but rather when we discover that we can only be truly free when we both become free.” Everyone listened in silence, nodding in approval. It had been understood that this is a true process, sometimes long and painful, always costly, of learning to ask ourselves: Why do I do what I do? Or, more precisely, for whom do I do what I do? In today's Gospel (Lk 6:6-11), Jesus reveals a subtle and extremely dangerous corruption of religiosity. In the middle of the synagogue, on the Sabbath, an especially consecrated day and subject to strict religious rules, he poses the decisive question to those present. He places in the center of the synagogue a man with a paralyzed hand. The fundamental question is, what is more important to God, worship or mercy?
