It happens every time I re-watch 'Red River’ (1948). Once again I’m in awe of how lush and grandly sweeping the score is. Regardless of the story and my personal thoughts on it (according to the American Film Institute its the 5th best in the entire western genre), the SCORE is among the top western scores as far as I’m concerned. It’s rich with folk music, full bodied orchestra, finely crafted leitmotifs, and drenched in American frontier spirit. Not to mention the song “Settle Down” written by the composer, which same excellent tune was later reused for “My Rifle, My Pony, And Me” in Wayne’s 1959 ‘Rio Bravo.’ Dimitri Tiomkin has been a favorite of of mine since I was 5 or so and fell for one of his scores in a film; but I appreciate him more when I re-watch the films he scored for the second or third time...like ‘Red River.’ And aside from the music, there were a few moments in the cinematography that made me ache to get out me pencils and draw... #redriver1948 #dimitritiomkin #goodart
