California death penalty: Letters By LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | [email protected] | Southern California News Group PUBLISHED: February 16, 2022 at 8:23 a.m. | UPDATED: February 17, 2022 at 8:27 a.m. Re “Newsom is right on death penalty” (Feb. 13): I take exception to the above article, as I recall Proposition 62 (abolish the death penalty) was rejected by California voters with 53.1% voting against it. Additionally, Proposition 66 (accelerate the process of capital trials and executions) was approved by those same voters by 51.1%. Both were voted on in November 2016. The governor may have the authority by virtue of the office to stay an execution, but he does not have the right to directly violate the will of the voters of the state he is supposed to represent. Lastly, I am offended by Mr. Rodriguez’s comment “a majority of California voters want the government to kill people,” which he references twice. There is always a consequence to one’s behavior; if adjudicated and convicted, one should accept that consequence. — John M.
