Today marks the anniversary of end of the five month long siege of Malta, known as the "Great Siege of Malta", in which a few thousand of the Knights of Saint John defeated an Ottoman Turkish invasion force of over forty thousand men and became the first great victory over the Ottomans. The siege would be one of the last land battles the Knights would participate in and also began the decline of Ottoman military power.
