September 11, 1861: After the First Battle of Bull Run, Union Gen. George McClellan strengthened the ring of forts & outposts defending Washington, D.C. He also planned to cautiously extend the area of northern Virginia under Union control. On September 11, a Rebel force under the command of Colonel J. E. B. Stuart engaged Union regiments while they were withdrawing from their reconnaissance & surveying mission in the Battle of Lewinsville, #Virginia. Even though the battle was an inconclusive artillery duel, Stuart won praise from his superiors and was promoted to general two weeks later. Also, a private, John S.
