An SS officer received the following letter from the father of a seriously wounded Dutch SS-man: "Middelburg, September 24, 1941 "I hereby confirm with thanks your letter of the 15th of this month. I can inform you that I have received a letter from my son in which he informs me that his left eye has been injured so that he can not longer see with it. "But he is very cheerful. Again and Again one reads in his letters that the price he has paid for his Fuhrer is not too great. From his letters, however, I notice one fear and one demand, the fear of being declared unfit for duty. "It is his wish to be allowed to be allowed to continue to fight for Europe's rejuvenation "My Son Hans has only one wish, not to be discharged, rather to somewhere continue to fulfill his duty as a soldier. "It would be our wish to wish to have Hans here on Vacation for a short time. Our Son being inclined as he is, the worst thing that could happen to him would be if he were discharged as unfit for duty, therefore I ask you to do everything in order to prevent that."
