June & July 1944: A Catastrophic Summer for the Wehrmacht In June 1944 the Allies landed in Normandy and later that month the Soviets launched Operation Bagration in the east. The results were catastrophic for the Wehrmacht. From June to August the Germans in the west lost somewhere between 400 to 500K men. From June to July, the Germans in the east lost an additional 450 to 550K men. In the final six months of the war the Germans suffered nearly 50% of all military deaths of the entire war. One German historian concluded approximately 1.23 million German soldiers died in the final four months of the war. The war was clearly lost by June 1944 yet the German government and military fought on in a hopeless situation. Soviet casualty figures are not as clear but estimates are that the Soviets suffered an additional 1.2 to 1.5 million casualties.
