Jai Halai and Monday-Malachi Rosenfeld were convicted of criminal damage at London’s National Gallery. Sentence: community service, not jail. On Oct. 9, 2024 they taped a Gaza mother-and-child poster over the glass on Picasso’s 1901 Motherhood and poured red water-based paint on the floor. Judge David Tomlinson: they did not try to damage the painting or its cover. He cited their ages — early twenties. They shouted the UK was “complicit in genocide.” Youth Demand is a Just Stop Oil offshoot. The gallery said the floor, not the canvas, took the cost. Hold everyone accountable.
