DHS proposed ending the 2017 60-day grace period. H-1B, L-1, O-1, TN, E, and H-1B1 workers — plus dependents — would fall out of status the day after the job ends. Agency line: restore a “direct relationship” between status and the job that justified admission. It “assumes” firms would hire equally qualified U.S. workers or file a new I-129. About 3,800 workers a year use the window; 200,000-plus spouses and children ride that status. Two-month public comment starts with Friday’s Federal Register notice. Proposal, not a final rule.
