June 19th, 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed by the United States government for their involvement in espionage during the Cold War. The couple was convicted of passing atomic bomb secrets to the Soviet Union, a crime that carried the death penalty. Their execution marked the first time in U.S. history that civilians were put to death for espionage during peacetime.
