The secular technological elite and coastal intelligentsia are spiraling into an acute spiritual crisis. I have thoughts. Because they are devoid of Christ these people are collapsing under the weight of existential dread. They are building systems that challenge their own assumptions about consciousness/mortality and find themselves staring into a void they are entirely unequipped to face. I would feel bad for them if so many were not so wickedly evil, but the true hope of Christ is that even they can be saved. We should earnestly pray for them to repent and believe. With the acceleration of AI for the first time in their lives high-IQ secular materialists are being forced to confront ultimate questions of human purpose, spiritual reality, and death. Without an anchor (Christ) in transcendent truth, their response has been a manic oscillation between apocalyptic panic and Promethean arrogance. They are undergoing a psychological breakdown that WILL BE destructive to both their own minds and the society they seek to direct. On the other hand we have a vocal segment of the American right which has descended into an embarrassing hysteria over modern technology. They believe artificial intelligence is the literal "mark of the beast" and industrial data centers (which have powered our digital infrastructure for over three decades btw) are somehow a deep state plot designed to poison the local water supply or spy on you or whatever. Too many Christians suffer from an acute lack of discernment and a complete absence of any coherent vision for the future. Scripture calls us to be sober-minded, capable of assessing reality with clarity, discipline, and purpose. Why has the modern Church lost sight of this? I believe this paralysis is largely the fruit of a century old eschatological failure within the American Church. Decades of dispensational defeatism and Zionist-aligned futurism have conditioned generations of believers to view the world through a lens of inevitable decline and inevitable destruction. Why bother building institutions, stewarding resources, or investing in the future when the world is supposed to burn, guaranteeing a sudden escape to avoid any hard labor? Jesus is going to swoop in and save the day, so chill out the end of the world is coming soon! This escapist mindset has effectively neutered Christian influence in cultural, industrial, and technological spheres for half a century or longer. The encouraging thing that I see, however, is that this defeatist posture is losing its grip on younger Christians. A rising generation is rejecting the bad theology of their fathers and recognizing instead that human ingenuity and technology are tools given by God to be wielded for His glory and the advancement of His Kingdom. They possess a grounded, enduring hope, and are confident that Christ rules and that His people are commanded to build, plant, and endure. The civilizational transition we are living through right now is unprecedented. I don't want to understate that. We are in for a wild ride. While the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions altered human social order, they unfolded across generations which allowed cultural and religious institutions time to adapt and absorb what was slowly unfolding. That's not the case this time. The current AI revolution is moving at breakneck speed. Societies without a firm foundation cannot absorb this kind of force. Because vast portions of our culture, secularist and nominal Christian alike, have rejected the chief cornerstone, (Christ) the shifting ground beneath their feet will induce fear, chaos, and destruction. Not at the hands of AGI, but by our own stupidity. I believe as Christians we must not cower before technological progress nor surrender its development to godless men. Technology must remain anchored in the sovereign Lordship of Christ, reject the doom-mongering of an exhausted generation, and build with clarity, confidence, and authority in the world God made. WE HAVE TO BUILD. WE MUST HAVE A COHERENT VISION FOR THE FUTURE. WE MUST POINT PEOPLE TO CHRIST, OUR GREAT AND ONLY TRUE HOPE FOR TIMES SUCH AS THESE.
