The cool thing about these Nixie tubes is that they were so simple. You don't need a full on micro controller with memory, or a decoder chip to change the numbers to what you wanted. People just build little slides that moved back and forth across contacts that went to each cathode. The drawback of them is they run at a significantly higher voltage than LED, and consumed more energy. Their simplicity and beautiful design makes up for it though. I have a Neon tube sitting here in front of me, but right now I would need to build a joule thief or something like that in order to power it. I might just do that to show it off too. It is the tiniest indicator light. It doesn't even glow brightly. It more or less looks like someone put a red highlighter tip in it. That is the only Neon tube I have sadly.
