Happy Father’s Day to Dads Down Under! Our societies are built out of smaller structures that stand between the individual and the broader society. These structures hold the society together: church, fraternity, union, local association, etc. We could call these “intermediary structures.” The ultimate intermediary structure is the father. He is the proper household sovereign. He is the decider in shaping his children. He is the family’s spiritual compass. Above all, he is the family’s last line of defence against tyranny. The word “father” goes back to a Bronze Age root *peh₂- meaning “to protect.” A father is, in the end, a protector. As the protector, he stands between the family and the forces of evil that crowd around it. He is the final boss that liberalism must defeat in order to squash all human difference and particularity. This is why the father is the most vilified figure in modernity. The vilification of the father is the root of all feminism, all anti-natalism, anything that is against folkhood and you having a country. The father is the cornerstone that holds up the world. When you look around, you might think the world is made of matter, or ideas, or energy. Most fundamentally, it is made of fatherhood. Happy Father’s Day.
