This week, skywatchers have a rare opportunity to witness Venus at its peak brightness, an event known as its "greatest brilliancy." On April 24, 2025, Venus will dazzle in the morning sky, shining at an impressive magnitude of -4.4, making it the brightest object in the sky after the sun and moon. This phenomenon, reported by Live Science, occurs just 67 days after Venus reached its greatest brilliancy in the evening sky on February 16, 2025, at a slightly brighter -4.6 magnitude. If you miss this week’s display, you’ll have to wait until September 22, 2026, for Venus to shine this brilliantly again. Venus, often called the "Morning Star" in its current predawn apparition, rises in the east before sunrise. Its brilliance is due to its proximity to Earth and its highly reflective cloud cover, which scatters sunlight effectively. Currently, Venus is racing away from Earth after passing between our planet and the sun during its inferior conjunction on March 23, 2025. This closeness, combined with its crescent phase—about 26% illuminated as seen through telescopes—creates the perfect conditions for maximum brightness. The planet’s disk appears larger when closer to Earth, but its thin crescent reflects just enough sunlight to outshine all other celestial objects except the sun and moon. For the best viewing, look east about an hour before sunrise. Venus will be unmistakable, blazing brightly even in twilight. On April 25, 2025, an added treat awaits: an 8%-illuminated crescent moon will appear just below Venus, with Saturn positioned nearby, forming a striking celestial trio. Mercury, though present, may be harder to spot low in the bright morning twilight. To enhance your experience, use binoculars or a small telescope to observe Venus’s crescent shape, which resembles a tiny, brilliant version of the moon’s crescent phase. This event is part of Venus’s 19-month cycle, during which it alternates between morning and evening apparitions. After its inferior conjunction, Venus transitioned from the evening sky, where it was the "Evening Star," to the morning sky. Its greatest brilliancy occurs roughly a month after this conjunction, when its distance from Earth and the angle of sunlight hitting its clouds align perfectly. By late April, Venus will rise earlier each day, climbing higher in the sky until it reaches its greatest western elongation—its farthest angular distance from the sun—on May 31–June 1, 2025. Why is Venus so bright? Its thick, sulfuric acid clouds reflect about 70% of the sunlight that hits them, far more than most planets. Additionally, Venus’s orbit, which takes 225 Earth days compared to our 365, brings it closer to Earth than any other planet—sometimes as close as 26 million miles (41 million kilometers). This proximity, especially during its crescent phase, amplifies its apparent brightness. If you’re clouded out this week, don’t worry—Venus will remain a brilliant morning object through October 2025. For daytime observers, Venus’s intensity makes it possible to spot even after sunrise, especially with the moon nearby as a guide on April 23–25. Use a stargazing app like Stellarium to pinpoint its location, and check sunrise times for your area to plan your viewing.
