📸🌇🏞️🫨❌To this day, no long distance photography of a skyscraper or mountain shows them slightly slanted away from the photographer due to geodesic curvature. (Geodesic refers to the shortest possible line between two points on a sphere or other curved surface. While a straight line is the shortest path on a flat sheet of paper, a geodesic represents that same “straight” concept adapted to curved geometry.) In this video in Brazil in 2011, they take it even one step further than photography with advanced GPS angled surveying of two buildings to measure between their tops and bottoms 3,000 km apart both at sea level. The researchers and civil engineers used high-precision professional surveying and positioning instruments to conduct their geodesic experiment between the two buildings (located in Torres and Natal, about 3,050 km apart): High-Precision GPS Receivers (L1/L2 Signal Receivers): They used these to perform precise position readings to chart and measure the bases of the buildings [03:51]. Total Station: After taking the baseline measurements with GPS, they used a total station to make precise readings of the vertical and horizontal angles to evaluate the plumb lines and tops of the buildings [04:08]. (A total station is an electronic surveying instrument that combines an electronic theodolite (for measuring horizontal and vertical angles) with an electronic distance meter (EDM) (for measuring slope distances) and an onboard computer. It calculates exact 3D coordinates (X, Y, and Z) of targeted points by processing angle and distance measurements simultaneously.) They then used these advanced angled measurements to determine if the distance between the tops and bottoms of the buildings were different even by a few meters or so as would be expected on a globe. Guess what the actual result was? They were the exact same measurements between the bottoms and tops of the buildings, which means the earth is flat and not a spinning ball. I’m also curious why they were doing this experiment in 2011 before the flat earth movement started in 2014. 🤯
