When the exiles returned to Jerusalem after 70 years in Babylon, they didn't find a glorious city; they found a wasteland. The walls were broken, and the Temple was in ruins. God was telling a discouraged people to "Arise, Shine" (Isaiah 60:1) because, even though their physical surroundings were dark, His spiritual glory had returned to them. We (Christians) are like that city—once "forsaken," but now being rebuilt with "walls of Salvation" As Paul would later write "Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). If you are the Temple, then the restoration of the city in Isaiah is the restoration of you. You don't have to fix your entire life, your past, and the world all at once. Focus on the "section of the wall" closest to you—your morning routine, your immediate reactions, or your current responsibilities. If you fix the part right in front of you, the whole city eventually becomes secure.
