In January 2020, Mullin’s son Jim — then about 15 and a serious wrestler — suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in a high school match. He was unconscious for roughly 26 hours. When he woke up he had major motor and short-term memory problems. Mullin has said Jim did not recognize his parents well, but when asked who the president was, he answered “Trump.” Then-President Trump called, offered his personal plane for travel to a rehab center in Bakersfield, California (Center for Neural Skills), and checked in frequently. Mullin has said Trump called almost daily for about two weeks, then kept calling for a long time afterward. Trump later visited Jim during the 2020 campaign. Mullin testified that aides tried to pull Trump away twice; the third time Trump said the plane would not leave without him for another 15 minutes and spent that time with the boy. Mullin said that visit helped “jog” Jim’s memory. He also recounted Trump telling Jim something close to: “Do you know why I love your dad? Because he loves you.” Mullin teared up telling this story at his March 18, 2026 Senate confirmation hearing to become Homeland Security secretary. He is now DHS secretary.
