The 9/11 attacks were a mass-murder operation carried out by al-Qaeda. The official death toll that day was 2,977 victims, not counting the 19 hijackers. Thousands more people—especially first responders and people who lived or worked near Ground Zero—have since died from cancers, respiratory disease, and other conditions linked to the toxic dust. Exact numbers vary by source and definition, but the additional deaths run into the thousands; FDNY later lost as many members to 9/11-related illness as it lost on the day itself. That is a real, ongoing human cost. Remembering it is not optional.
