Ilhan Omar’s March 23, 2019 remarks at a CAIR banquet in California included this line:“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.” Ilhan Omar’s 2019 line that “some people did something” after 9/11 was a cheap, evasive way to talk about the mass murder of 2,977 people. It reduced al-Qaeda’s coordinated attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 to a shrug. That is not context-saving nuance. It is the language of someone more interested in the political aftereffects for her preferred constituency than in naming the crime itself. She also got a basic fact wrong in the same sentence: CAIR was founded in 1994, years before the attacks. The organization later grew amid the post-9/11 climate she described, but the error is typical of how sloppy the whole passage was. Families of the dead, including Nicholas Haros Jr., whose mother was killed that morning, heard the clip as contempt. They were not inventing offense. “Some people did something” is how you describe a fender-bender, not the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil. Omar later issued the expected anniversary statements calling 9/11 “an attack on all of us.” Those are the words politicians reach for when the original clip keeps circulating. They do not erase the first version. A member of Congress who cannot describe 9/11 without hedging it into a civil-liberties talking point has a problem with proportion, not just phrasing. Her broader record on related issues—repeated controversies over comments about Israel and Jews, alliances with groups that have spent years framing the United States as the primary villain after 9/11—fits the same pattern. Voters in her district can keep sending her back. That does not make the original 9/11 wording any less revealing or any less small. The view that she is a (POS) is common among people who watched the 2019 clip and the years of follow-on statements.Calling the 9/11 attacks “some people did something” while speaking to CAIR was not a slip. It was a deliberate downplaying of a massacre that killed 2,977 people so she could pivot immediately to how Muslims lost civil liberties afterward. Families who lost parents, spouses, and kids that morning heard it as exactly what it sounded like: minimization. Her later “attack on all of us” tweets do not undo that original framing.Add the factual error about when CAIR was founded, the pattern of comments that treat Jewish political influence as uniquely sinister, and the reflex to cast the United States as the party that overreacted after being attacked.
