The clip is real and it looks exactly as bad as people say. While family members were reading the names of the dead at Ground Zero and others were crying, Zohran Mamdani and AOC were caught laughing together. That is not a private aside at a dinner. It is the 25th anniversary ceremony on the site where 2,977 people were murdered. The optics are indefensible. Families had already asked him not to come. A petition organized by relatives of victims collected well over 100,000 signatures. Their reasons were specific: Mamdani’s associations with people who have said America “deserved” 9/11, his appointment of a chief counsel who previously represented an al-Qaeda operative, and a years-long habit of anniversary statements that immediately fold the American dead into a larger ledger of “wars that followed.” They wanted a day of mourning without that overlay. He showed up anyway. Then he and AOC provided the video that proved their point. Mamdani has spent the week insisting the focus should stay on the families and first responders. Laughing through the name-reading is the opposite of that. It tells anyone watching that the solemnity is optional for him. That is why the families did not want him there. The ceremony is supposed to say the names of the murdered.
