History leaves evidence. When a historical artifact disappears, is destroyed, altered, or deliberately removed from public view, we lose more than an old object. We lose evidence. Documents can be rewritten. Memories can fade. Political narratives can change. But an original building, photograph, manuscript, monument, tool, or personal possession can tell us something directly about the people and events that came before us. Preserving history doesn't mean agreeing with everything our ancestors did. It means having enough respect for the truth to preserve the evidence, even when that evidence is uncomfortable. A mature society shouldn't be afraid of its history. It should be willing to examine it.
