A COVID-19 vaccine safety story that deserves a closer look. One of the more closely investigated safety signals during the COVID-19 vaccination campaign was myocarditis and pericarditis, inflammation involving the heart muscle or the surrounding membrane. What makes the story interesting is that the signal wasn't simply based on one person's experience. Safety-monitoring systems in the U.S. and Europe continued examining reports and epidemiological data, and regulators eventually recognized myocarditis and pericarditis as very rare possible side effects of certain COVID-19 vaccines. The risk was observed most often in adolescent and young adult males, particularly within days after an mRNA vaccination. At the same time, it's important to distinguish "an adverse event reported after vaccination" from "an adverse event proven to have been caused by vaccination." That's why pharmacovigilance exists, to investigate signals, compare them with background rates, and update safety information as evidence develops.
